A Bit Of Reminiscing in Galt, CA

On Saturday, December 13, 1902, The Galt Weekly Gazette had the following newsworthy items:

"Mrs. Ellison, principal of the Galt school, [There was only one school!] has been ill with measles for over a week. Miss Harms of Pleasanton, a sister of Dr. Harms of this place, is 'substituting' for her and has charge of her class room.

The Buchanan Dramatic Company will appear in Brewster's Hall, Galt, [The IOOF Hall] Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. The Buchanan troupe is a good one, and you must not miss it when it plays here.

The Galt creamery is booming and the amount of milk separated is steadily on the increase. For November 1965 pounds of butter was sold from milk brought to the creamery, which, at 31 cents a pound, returned $608.15. How is that? Go into the milk cow business!

New Hope farmers have been selling their fat hogs during the week to San Francisco buyers. The price realized was 5 5/8 cents a pound. Arthur Thornton and Will Journeay were among the heaviest shippers.

Thomas Jenkins, by his attorneys, James B. Devine and Devlin & Devlin, Thursday filed his answer in the election contest brought against him by Gillis Doty for the office of Supervisor of the Fifth District. The official count as made by the Board of Supervisors showed that Jenkins was elected by a majority of five votes, whereupon his opponent, Doty, demanded a recount. Here's a little from the "Persons" column of that same paper:

J.W. Angrave visited Sacramento Tuesday.

J.K. McKinstry visited Sacramento last Tuesday.

Miss Emma Ferguson visited Sacramento Monday.

John Brewster, Sr., visited Sacramento yesterday.

Charles Quiggle returned from San Francisco Tuesday.

Mrs. John Brewster Jr., visited Sacramento Wednesday.

Mrs. A.T. Ames is convalescing from an attack of the grip.

Seymour Carr, who was seriously injured by a fractious bull last week, is slowly recovering."

Ah, yes! Life was slower then.  Wasn't it?  Going to Sacramento was an event!
