Motorcycle races were held in Galt in and around 1945-46, and they were run on the race track at the County Fairgrounds. The track was where we now have a weekly open-air market. The County Fairgrounds included much of the land and property east of Lincoln Way, beginning at Caroline and going south, including all of Fairsite School and the swimming pool complex. It seems they were very popular and people came from all over the north area to witness the daredevils and their motorized bicycles. Among those who raced was a man named Stillo, who was killed in Galt during a race.
We’re looking for information about these events, and more about the racer who lost his life here. Does anyone know more about the races? Did they move to Lodi after that? Can you fill us in? We’d like to know more. Please call (209) 745-0951 if you have any information about this historical puzzle.
