20th Anniversary

GALT AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

This year marks 20 years of historic preservation work for the Galt area that was accomplished by members of the Society.  See the pictures of the 20th anniversary dinner party.

During that time they have;

1.  Restored a Victorian Queen Ann Cottage as The Rae House Museum.

The lovely restored Queen Ann cottage known as the Rae House Museum in Galt, California.

2.  Preserved two pioneer cemeteries, the Liberty and the Elliott and both are on Liberty Road.

The pioneer cemetery of Liberty, California, now known as Galt. Gault is a common misspelling.  Elliiot was a town 5 miles east of Galt on Liberty Road. The town is gone, but the cemetery remains as the single reminder. This pioneer cemetery is maintained by the Galt Area Historical Society.

9.  Built this website and a specialized one for the McFarland Ranch so that you may learn more about the history of Galt.

Their current restoration project is the McFarland Living History Ranch, about 3 and ½ miles west of Galt on Orr Road. When it is completed, it will preserve 35 acres of the 3800-acre ranch once owned by John McFarland, the man who named the town of Galt.

The Society is inviting the Community and all others who have an interest in the area to join them in celebrating twenty years of service to the City of Galt and the surrounding cities of Thornton, Herald, Hicksville, Clay, Arno, Colony, Elliott, and Liberty.

Throughout the year 2006, members of the Galt Area Historical Society will be celebrating this milestone in their history in different ways. On July 8th, they are hosting a community dinner at 6:00p.m. at McFarland Living History Ranch.

The dinner will include live entertainment by members of the California State Old-Time Fiddlers Association and also some special presentations to the Society. There will be no tickets sold at the door, so tickets must be purchased in advance. To check on availability of tickets, call (209) 745-0951 before Friday the 8th at 5:00p.m.

Before the year ends, a special presentation will mark the identification of the second official local landmark in the area.

Applications are available in the Marian O. Lawrence Library in Galt, or you may print it out. We invite you to join us as we preserve the irreplaceable!
